Albeit with social distancing and other health precautions in place, Bonhams staged a live sale of collector cars at the Goodwood SpeedWeek event and reports that a trio of classic Ferraris topped the event.

Leading the way was a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS, one of only 100 produced. In bidding that Bonhams likened to a “tactical and strategic” boxing match between two suitors, the car eventually sold for $1,639,336 (price includes buyer’s fee).

That sale came just three lots after a recently restored 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS coupe sold for more than $400,000 and just a few lots before a 1969 365 GTC, part of the Chester Collection and one of only 22 with right-hand drive, brought $686,134.

Bonhams noted with pride that a pair of vintage and W.O. Bentley-designed Lagondas — a 1939 V12 drophead coupe and a 1938 V12 Le Mans — were among the top-10 sellers at the auction.

Also of note was the sale, for more than $297,000, of the 1957 BMW 503 formerly owned by the late John Surtees, the only person to win Formula One and world motorcycle racing championships.

Bonhams did not announce an overall sales total or a sell-through rate.
